Analysis of the short story "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Ellan Poe

1. Plot Structure: Triangular

Exposition
We are introduced to a nameless man and he tell about an old man. We learn that the old man is kind of master of the nameless man. This old man also has a weird-looking eye which is called as "vulture eye" by our storyteller and we obviously see that he somehow finds this eye disgusting and hateful.

Rising Action: The nameless storyteller is obsessed with this vulture eye and he finally decides to remove it. To do this, he plans the kill the old man even though he accepts that the old  man is always kind to him and there is no reason to kill it. Except for the vulture eye... He visits the old man's room everynigt to find an opportunity to kill him and keeps watching him sleeping.

Climax: The man kills the old man.
Ending: His heart continue anymore, he cannot control himself and reveals the truth to the policemen.

Conflict: Logic vs desire / rational vs obsession / man vs man
Througout the story, we learn abot the internal conflict of the teller. He confesses that the old man who he wants to kill has done nothing bad to him. On the other hand, he cannot stand with the old man's weir-looking vulture eye unreasonably. The eye disturbes him so much that he decides to kill the old man in order to make the eye closed forever.

3. Ending
: It is closed ending and it can also be a surprising ending to some readers.
4. Characterisation:
Both the protagonist annd the antagonist are the same person: The mad man. The mad man is dynamic and round. He goes through changes. We learn about his psyhology and character. He is psychotic and obsessed. With deeper examination, we understand that the mad man establishes a hierarchy between himself and the readers claiming that he is cleverer.
5. Point of view:
First person narration, major participant. The teller sometimes adresses to the readers while questioning.
6.Mood:
Tense, gloomy, scary
Throughout the story, we read about the mad man's obsession about the vulture eye. He plans killing the old man and after it, he decides to deceive the policemen.

7.Language: Language of the story is easy to understand. There are metaphors, foreshadowing and aftershadowing elements. The eye is used as a metaphor for obsession. The ticking sound that the mad man hears becomes an aftershadowing element as we learn that it was not the old man's heart but his own heart's.
8.Themes: Internal conflict, madness, murder, obsession, death and superiority.
9.Setting:
The story takes place in a house and in the mind of the mad man. There is no specific time reference but it is mostly about midnigt.
